Australians may come across to the world as fun loving people who like to lounge on the sunny beaches all day long, but don’t be misled by the externalities. We hear about an issue from far away and we think it won’t affect us. In the last year Marty has focused on migrant stories. They became suspicious of us, and they were particularly controlling during the Gulf War. Chris I think they have a vision of soldiering that’s born of another time. That would be the best-case scenario. This list may not reflect recent changes (). Absolutely. Danielle And, I think the relationships changed very much after Vietnam. Jack is comfortable shooting and editing anything from celebrity interviews to documentaries and even sketch comedy. The articles use personal experiences well and weave them in with geopolitical observations, interviews, quotes, statistics and facts — not easy to do. I certainly think about that when I’m making things. It’s a bit of a cliché but I don’t think journalists do the work that we do to get awards — it’s more about hopefully making a difference. I think there’s been a drift, you know, there was a proud relationship between journalists and the military in the first and second world war. They’re great listeners, because you learn that form your first weeks at Kapooka, that you have to understand what the order is. We interviewed all the characters and people involved. Chris has also published four books. Congratulations on winning the Shortform award for your work on Robodebt. Chris I thought there was more to the story, and I wanted to dig in deeper. It’s a mixed story, and they wouldn’t always defend them, but they’d say to me, “No, look, this is their country, if we don’t get it right for them there’s not point in being here.” And they would say, “We can’t expect them to have the level of training that we have.” Now, I don’t think that’s well understood back in Australia. Picking up an award from the Walkleys for your first edit, that’s a pretty big honour! They must have very good psych testing, because, you know, if it was a battle of wits, they’d almost always win. In 2018 she spent three months working in the UK for News Corp as a foreign correspondent. That led to me doing better stories, anyway — that flexibility allowed me to continue to work, but in a way that suited the way things were going. No doubt about it, you know? But to actually weed out the truth from all the rumour, it was like Chinese whispers. But, you’ve hit on an interesting subject for a writer, because I believe in telling a story. Clearly there was a problem and some of the people I spoke to were really broken by it. Sometimes it can feel like you’re just slogging away without a lot to show for it, so winning [shows] that your work has really cut through and the message is being heard. “There’s a lot of mistrust towards certain media outlets, this all-encompassing idea that anything you read anywhere will be untrue, and that’s a really scary world to live in”. But all of these things are interconnected. A lot of the problems with academic research and academic papers is that they’re inaccessible to the public, which is one of the greater values of journalism, that it translates complicated information in a way that’s digestible for the common person. What’s the best part for you of having this trophy and being able to say you have a Young Journalist of the Year award? And, it even got worse, that deal, because some of their own allies began to shoot at them as well. Chris With special forces… the first chapter of the book is called Corporal Dan, and it’s about the experience of one special forces solider. He will lead Australia’s premier current affairs teams and programs across broadcast and digital, including 7.30, Australian Story, Four Corners, Q&A, Insiders, Offsiders, Lateline, Foreign Correspondent, Behind the News, AM, PM, The World Today and … It’s not an abstract idea. They’ll sometimes say to me, “I’m really pleased that you’ve told this story because now my wife knows what I do.” I say, “Well, why didn’t you tell your wife?” You know, they won’t do that. It’s given me a bit of hope and new energy to keep going. I was keen to look at it from a new angle for The Feed, from the perspective of young people, and we were just lucky to find a couple of super intelligent young people [who] had a really great way to express it. You know, so why don’t we think the same because he happens to have a weapon? With almost 20 years’ experience, Nick has won every major award in Australian journalism. He certainly seemed a lot more open than others. As soon as she started telling me about it, I wanted to find out why this woman was in jail. That’s very important because the world is very big and there’s a lot of things happening, which we don’t even consider a lot of the time. You don’t do it for the awards, as everyone always says, but it’s just a nice form of recognition. Chris But, I think he’s a strong enough, and good enough, mature solider to be able to cope with the trashing that he will get from his mates, but he will get it. Would you encourage other young journalists to submit their work for next year’s Young Journalist of the Year Awards? Six years – is that right? It’s just a nice thing to know that you’ll have that no matter what, that now you’ve got something to show for the long hours and the hard slog. And it was very difficult for me to order my ideas and to make them accessible to a reader that knows nothing about Rwanda or might not be interested in Rwanda. I had to interweave two essential threads, one was the story of Afghanistan and one was the world of the modern solider, and indeed the book interweaves those chapters. In the middle of this pandemic, hunkered down in our little apartment bureaus around the country, not being connected in a newsroom the way we normally are — that was just a really nice thing to come together and celebrate. Fred did not want to speak to us. The media is fast and furious, it’s not thorough and accurate, it’s always been that way. Anything unexpected? I started working in entertainment and I found it a little bit vacuous and non-fulfilling, to be honest. I’m hearing it from my extended family, from my friends — there’s a lot of mistrust towards certain media outlets. But, I’d written a different chapter to do the same thing earlier, after I came back from Afghanistan in 2010. I’ve just got two more really quick questions to ask. How did you come across it? Have you become aware of any of the outcomes that your work has had on people who were impacted by Robodebt? The book was eventually published by Allen & Unwin and went on to win the Australian Book Industry Awards, Australian Biography of the Year. It always takes me too long to do this work, because I dig in and then all do for first little while is find out what I don’t know. Or anybody embarking on this kind of journey? The result of six years of exhaustive research, Uncommon Soldier takes rare and close look at the life of Australian soldiers, both at home and abroad. Point being, when I was in Rwanda, the reality and what I’d heard was not in alignment whatsoever. My understanding of the Rwandan political realm — the social political realm — only got fleshed out and became more complex once I was in Rwanda itself. It doesn’t really trust journalists. You know, I don’t particularly like the polemic, I don’t want to tell people how to think about something. I have to say I thought he was pretty special in that somehow, somehow he thought it was important that he tell me his story. What are the best things for you about working at a show like The Feed? Jackman has won international recognition for his roles in major films, notably as … As part of my research I met up with two academics, who have since been banned from ever re-entering Rwanda because they had dared to criticise the Rwandan government. For you, Marty, and the team Patrick and Jack, how do you guys feel about having won the Visual Storytelling category in the Young Journalist of the Year Awards this year? I studied refugee policy and migration, and I became fascinated by some of those things. From June 2018, he spent nine months travelling, working and volunteering through eastern and southern Africa. I was quite proud of that reporting, and I do think it has led to social change. For a lot of Aboriginal journalists, most stories have that element to it. As part of my undergraduate degree at USNW, I was doing international politics, and the region which most interested me was Central Africa, Central and Northern Africa, and by extension, I started researching Rwanda. And the second thing is that some people would mention the economic success story of Rwanda. You’re calling this a book about Afghanistan, but ultimately it’s about the soldiers as well, and notions we have about diggers and that sort of thing. It’s hugely important. Was that justice and what are the ongoing impacts of those policies on young people today; the intergenerational impacts of that? I mean that story happened to me many times. When you get to the writing process how do you go about, I guess, culling that, ordering it, planning it – did you have to make really tough decisions about what stayed in and what came out? His 1987 report, ‘The Moonlight Stage', on corruption in Queensland resulted in the establishment of the Fitzgerald Inquiry and a series of far-reaching reforms in that state. We’re just so lucky that we do have news organisations to provide accurate information and counter that misinformation. But, somehow in the Vietnam era the journalists took over the chronicling, and the soldiers didn’t like it quite so much, you don’t have so many books written by soldiers about Vietnam. So, I think there was that concern, but there were many, many more concerns, and there was even a sort of base cultural difficulty, and that is that when that group forms, when the mates all get together, and the team becomes more important than the individual they don’t really let the individual speak. I could tell – I could see what outthinking me time and time again. Attributing the profession of journalist to a fictional character allows many possibilities for the author: reporters may travel extensively and face adventures (like Tintin), are among the first to have news of disasters and crimes (like Clark "Superman" Kent and Peter "Spider-Man" Parker), and are supposed to be good at establishing communication. So earlier you mentioned that you spent six years on this book. To see them and to see the relationship they had with their grandparents and how it had shaped them was really powerful. I think organisation is really important. Her family and other people who were involved in the case all lived in Kununurra, which is in the East Kimberley. But, when I started that interweaving, it just started to work. I was absolutely thrilled. He invited us to a press conference that he napped at. But Connie Levett, the editor of Newsworthy, she helped me a lot, and Peter White as well, a media professor at UNSW and journalist. So we had everyone on interview. Radio For work... I was working in music journalism and entertainment, and I loved that because I was 21 and I got to go to festivals and shows all the time. When Jody’s case first happened, her trial in 2015 didn’t really get any news coverage at the time. Did you feel a close, personal connection to this story, and did that affect the way that you went about pursuing it and putting it together? Actually, I had it vetted by a solider, so hopefully there aren’t too many mistakes, a few have been pointed out. I guess the nicest thing has been the people that have said, “Look, thank you. We’re seeing now that media was not in a great shape before the pandemic, and now we’re seeing communities lose their local paper, which they’ve sometimes had for over 100 years. It was just such a key part of my childhood, so it’s hard to imagine another generation coming up not even knowing that. That story really showed the power of good journalism, when you can put compelling facts in front of the public and have an impact. The first thing is that I was surprised at how intelligent and mature they generally are, and how difficult and complicate their work is. During the filming of that, Fred fell asleep. What is special and different about the Australian solider? What’s been the best thing about winning this award? And we know our work is better for it. Some journalists complained about problems of access, but I actually was surprised when I went there, quite a few times, and they were extremely cooperative, but Afghanistan very different. It was very fun. Was it difficult for you, personally, to cut that? So to have the investigation recognised is important, [it shows] the significance of doing stories around domestic violence. For this story, all the characters were there, I just needed to bring them to life and, hopefully, get them all to agree to talk to me on camera. I mean you think of the scandals that associated with the behavior of American troops, and yet the public regard for the American servicemen is much higher than it is here in Australia. And of course at the other end of it, our own industry is dying around our ears, so I don’t think Afghanistan was too well covered by the media. I’m sure he probably wouldn’t say the same, but we’ve loved working together. An excellent and fascinating read.” — The Walkley Judges. Does that still hold or is journalism looking like a potential viable career path now? Do you have a message for the Australian public about the importance of high-quality, impactful public interest journalism? On the topic of keeping the powerful accountable, what would you like the Australian public to know about why quality journalism is an essential force for our democracy? We’re all very proud of the story that we submitted about the Christian Democratic Party and this coup d’etat in state politics in New South Wales. Just Famous Australians. Another role of media is to keep [online] debates well-informed and make sure they’re based on reliable facts. Something that happens in Africa, for example, does affect the rest of the world. How did you come to this story in the first place and how did it develop? So, I don’t think many of us – I felt when I was at Four Corners, I couldn’t see anybody else on the floor whose lives in anyway interconnected with the lives of anybody ADF. Pat Forrest is a designer, animator and writer. That’s going to change things for him. Chris I thought that was the way I could be most useful, I suppose. Just finally do you have any advice for budding journalists? You just pull your camera out of the box and they appear and they perform, the Americans in particular. I don’t think he ever expected that. Chris And, they said, “Why don’t you write about Afghanistan?” And I blinked and thought about it, and I didn’t have a good answer. Danielle The obstacles were that the whole program was shrouded in secrecy, particularly once the legal challenges began, so it was very easy for the government to avoid answering questions about the program. You know they stand up for them when they get on a bus. They’ve been telling me they’re quite stoked to see the story in the spotlight because for so long, the issues at this school have been under cover of darkness and in silence… This wouldn’t have happened unless I managed to get people in that community to trust me. It’s also about giving people a voice. I’ll write another book. At one point in the conversation I said, “You’ve never seemed scared of an interview, Fred, over the course of your career in politics.” And he said, “You’re right. He interned at The Feed during film school and was hired as a production coordinator and then promoted to a shooter/editor. I think the special forces guys are pretty happy with. And I love it, so that always helps. I like a story to unfold organically, I want the reader to want to turn the page. This is a classic example of something that happens in the industry a lot — you see an article that exists already. You really have to give yourself time to think. I definitely would. What do you hope that readers will get out of this? It’s a rare circumstance where a solider tells you about what they did. “Fine.” He didn’t say a word. There was a history of lawsuits and really ugly stuff behind all of this, so I had to be careful and I wanted to be really fair. Yeah. The work that The Feed does, it opens up a window into other people’s experiences and we tend to tell quite heartfelt, authentic stories. I was also exploring my own cultural heritage. I thought I would be more organized and ordered than when I wrote the last book, and in some respects I’m getting better at marshalling research, for the sake of in-notes, et cetera. But I also knew about a lot of human rights violations, and what price the economic success comes at. We’re often our own harshest critics… I have a lot of colleagues who’ll be really harsh on themselves, but then when you look back, they’ve done some amazing work over the year. So, it seemed to me that we had a proud culture on the one hand, and a newly detached subculture on the other hand, so I wanted to somewhat bridge that divide. I can’t wait. His explosive reporting, exposing the controversial Robodebt program, shone a light on the devastating impact it had on thousands of Australia’s most vulnerable. You can see that in a more tangible correlation between Africa and Europe and migrants, for example, and that affects the rest of the world too. I said, “Well, just sit down with us, we’ll have a chat.” On the second or third time, he said, “All right, why don’t you come to this event I have on?” It was like a conservative meeting, a talk on political correctness and why it’s gone wrong, and Fred was there as a dignitary. That’s the bulk of knowledge I had when I went to Rwanda, which was part of a nine-month trip — instead of doing my final year at university, I went to travel through Africa instead, because I wanted to get a better understanding of the region before I graduated, so I’d have a better understanding of what I wanted to do next. Chris I tell you what, you hate making a mistake when you write a book about soldiers, they’re really anal about that stuff, and of course I’m going to make mistakes, because it’s actually really hard to understand all of the terminology and all the abbreviations of whatever. Should I not?” It can be a bit of a self-conscious or nerve-wracking thing to do. I really wanted to interview Jody. It’s awesome. And my heart went out to them, actually.
